HDR chicago lock
The Chicago Harbor Lock which serves as a gateway to one of the nation's busiest commercial and recreational waterways. Over 55,000 vessels, 900,000 passengers, and 400,000 tons of cargo pass through its gates annually. It is the country's 2nd busiest lock. Constructed in 1938 it is 600 feet long, 80 feet wide and 22 feet deep. To get into the lake from the Chicago River boats enter the lock and tie up to the side. The river gates are closed then the lake gates open and 750,000 gallons of water rush into the lock lifting all the boats 2 feet in a matter of minutes. The lock opens and closes about 11,000 times per year.
