Taken in Rubigen (Canton Bern, Switzerland) on the banks of the river Aar.

The river Aar flows through relatively flat terrain within the normally undulating foothills region. This level was created after the last ice age, when, after the retreat of the glaciers first a large lake was formed, which was gradually filled up by the sediment of rivers, of which today the lakes of Thun and Lake Brienz are left over.

East of the Aare valley are the hills of the Emmental, and west the Belpberg, which separates the Aare valley from Gürbe valley.

Through the Aare Valley leads the A6 motorway and the railway line Berne-Thun, which leads both to Interlaken and the Lötschberg to the Valais and Italy.

In the Aare valley also lies the Belpmoos with its small airport Bern-Belp.

The largest town between Bern and Thun is Münsingen.
