Jena - Pulverturm 02
The (Pulverturm) powder tower is a part of the old town wall of Jena.
About 1300 the Jenaer city fortification had prospered so far that one could speak of a closed arrangement.
She existed of ditches, walls, kennel areas, 3 gate pileworks, 4 corner bastions and 12 afterwards inserted bowl pileworks. The powder tower on the northwest corner of the town wall is about 20 m high and has 4 floors with contact. Together with the reconstructed military way, the house on the wall and the Johannistor this is the biggest still preserved part of the former Jenaer city fortification.
The tower disposes only of one single access, a low gate at about 7-m height. This gate is to be reached about the reconstructed military way. By the nearby Johannistor the old trade route led from Erfurt to Altenburg. One of four suburbs of medieval Jena, the Johannisvorstadt, lay before the ensemble.
