Three shitty things happened while exploring this property, which is so far down a remote gravel road that I saw no other living soul on my drive.
One, a creaky shingle blowing in the high desert wind made the hair stand up on my arms. Two, I surprised a flock of quail on my approach, causing them to simultaneously take to the skies, calling their alarm sounds. I damn near jumped out of my skin.
Three, as I was leaving and feeling in my pocket for the car keys, I quickly realized they were gone. Now that's a true panic-mode...car locked, cell phone, food, and water locked inside. Nobody coming up this road for god-knows-how-long. I was contemplating having to break my window out as I retraced my steps, and then said a (you have to understand that I am not religious, and I generally do not pray in the true sense of the term) "THANK YOU JESUS!!!" as I came upon the keys, fallen from my pocket inside the house as I knelt for a photo.
Crisis averted, but I'm keeping a close eye out for quail and falling car keys from now on!
