"Witch Wines Can We Scare Up For You"

The truth is that my trip to Toronto wasn´t very well thought through, which wasn´t necessarily a bad thing. Lately I´ve been listening a lot to Canadian bands and since Chicago isn´t that far away from Canada I just decided to go to Toronto.

While there though it turned out that most people recommended me to get out of Toronto if I wanted to see anything memorable. So I hopped on a day tour to the Niagara Falls which turned out to be a rather bizarre experience. On the worn minibus that vaguely reminded me of an old bookmobile I realised that all the other passengers were either very confused Indians or just as confused old people. Nice.

Anyway, we made a stop at one of the wineyards that populate the area close to the Canadian/US-border, all of them seemingly into producing the local speciality known as "ice wine". Ice wine is quite literally a wine that is being produced using grapes that are being left to freeze on the wine itself, then picked and pressed without the frost ever leaving the grapes. Famous grapes such as Riesling and Chardonnay are used to make different varieties, both red and white, but all of them have one thing in common - they´re all too sugary and sticky sweet to be used as nothing but desert wines.

During the tasting at Pillitteri Estates (which was without a doubt the least professional testing I´ve experienced, then again the crowd didn´t seem to have ever tried wine before anyway so...) I tried out an assortment of their standard whites and reds (all of them were bleak) as well as a couple of different ice wines. It´s fun to say that I´ve tried them, but I couldn´t honestly recommend them to anyone unless you´re on the lookout for a heavily overpriced dessert wine that taste like a cheap... dessert wine.
