Kow Ata underground sulfur lake, Turkmenistan
The darkness behind the fence is the underground lake. Once (if) you pass the corner you´ll find yourself swimming in complete darkness, with the bats flying inches from your head. Not to repeat myself but man, that was an amazing and at the same time scary feeling.
The water being rich in minerals is considered healthy and locals believe in the healing powers of the sulfur lake. On a "funny" side note our guide when sitting down for lunch afterwards told us a little bit about the lake and casually threw in a little oddity about two American scientists who´d tried to map the lake. One of them never came back alive but had been dragged off by the powerful streams of water a couple of meters underneath the surface. When asked why the hell he didn´t tell us this before we dove in he shrugged his shoulders and said:
"Well you know, I used to tell people this but then they would get afraid and refuse to get into the water."
Gee, I wonder why.
