An overview of Old Nissa.

As Old Nissa was used as a sort of cult complex and also at times an imperial residence, a different city where trade and commerce flourished was built next to it. It was given the surprisingly fresh name New Nissa and this was also the capital of the Parthian empire.

The first fatal strike at Old Nissa was delivered in 226 AD when Parthia ceased to exist and the new ruler Artashid decided to destroy the city in hopes of eradicating the memories of the former empire. A couple of hundred years later arabs revived the city.

This being the first site I did visit I at first thought it was amazing to be there, all alone without a horde of other tourists running around. Silence can be a powerful setting.
