The portrait of Chairman Mao watches out over Tiananmen Square, the giant square that back in 1989 was the site for the public protest that in the west have become known as the "Tiananmen Square Massacre" when the tanks of the Peoples Liberation Army rolled in and crushed the protest using lethal force. The chinese refer to this occasion as the "June Fourth Incident".
Beind him lies the mighty Forbidden City, once the closed city of emperors living in seclusion from the outside world and its inhabitants for more than 500 years. Just by standing here you can feel the historic importance of this place. And on this very occasion you could also feel the warm rays of the sun pretty bad, hence the guard covering himself in the shade.
