"Roland"

This guy made about half of my trip on the California Zephyr to Chicago. Roland was the man in charge of the sleeping car that I was on for the 55 hour long journey and I often stumbled into him during short breaks off the train, in the dwindling corridors or when he made my bed in the evening. He also was cool enough to bring me breakfast every morning. What a guy.

He told me that he´d been working at Amtrak since the late 70´s and that he was closing in on his retirement, something that he looked forward to. No wonder, I can just imagine what a life on the rails through and across, up an down America must be (and feel) like.

While resting for a bit in the wee town of Fraser, Colorado I asked him if I could shoot his portrait. He smiled like a pro and let me snap away even though we clearly had to get going.

If you ever read this Roland - here´s to you buddy.
