The "X-lines" brand identity was introduced in 2019 to house express or limited-stop services and is designed to provide a more premium customer experience.
Service X20 at Deptford was one of the first services to be brought into the "X-lines" family, following service changes which saw an enhanced X20 service introduced, instead running all day Monday to Saturday instead of at peak-times only.
Further changes have been made to the route since, with its extension to Langley Park via Arnison Centre, providing cross-city links in Durham, and the introduction of a Sunday service.
The striking branding promotes the fast links between Sunderland and Durham, and aims to stand out against standard local buses with a metallic gold colourscheme.
Larger buses have been allocated to service X20 over the last twelve months due to social distancing needs, but these have been unbranded Wright Streetlites. Go North East has now confirmed that the full-size single-deck vehicle allocation will remain post-Covid, with the conversion of the service to 6x Mercedes Citaros, due to the growth these services saw pre-Covid.
