About sunset and Gamuts...

EXPLORE #457 29/07/2009 I have tried to see how good is the gamut of my monitor with the phot of a sunset taken a few years ago at the Sahara desert. First of all, it is impressive how different the Adobe and sRGB colour spaces are. With the first one (not visible here), much more yellow and red tones are distiniguishable. However, they were all gone after the colour profile conversion. Thanks to my good friend and photographer Rafael Alarcón I have learned how important is to do the things right and the difference between a good and a crappy monitor. Who said that photography is a cheap hobby?

Recommedation: have a look at the Eizo CG222W Eizo CG222W monitor. It is quite impressive beast and not the most expensive one around! Gamut 5/5 and 92% of the Adobe color space.

I use the EyeOne Display 2 calibration device and it works fine for me. It is one of the cheapest around (which does not mean it is cheap) and I had no problems when used with the Eizo calibration software (it saves the calibration curve directly into the monitor's CAL mode).

My main problem was caused by Windows XP, that is NOT AT ALL a good OS for colour management. Now I moved to VISTA (as a temporary solution until Windows 7 is debugged) and things improved a bit. Nevertheless, it is still a pain in the ass to watch the same photo with different programs and have a different response.
