Algae Farming
A seaweed farmer has a smoke while he poles his skiff loaded with algae toward the beach on Nusa Lembongan, an island off the south coast of Bali, Indonesia. Seaweed farming and dive-related tourism are the main trades on the island. The algae are grown on grids of rope staked in the shallows, and every day the farmers go out to cut off the clumps and bring them to shore, where they are sorted, dried, and then shipped out for processing. The carrageenan is used as a thickener in things like ice cream.
