Stella's Last Days

Our dear Stella was diagnosed on 6 September 2021 with inoperable bone cancer. The large bulge on her right shoulder is a tumor. As shown in this photo taken on 1 October, she was not in severe pain for several weeks and still loved to go out, run around and generally enjoy life. Her initial lack of pain was due to a remarkable new pain medication.* However, as you can see, she already did not like to put much weight on her right front foot.

But finally, starting in mid October, she only wanted to stay home and be cuddled on the couchm, and down briefly to eat her food. By 28 October, it was clear that she was in constant pain and no longer enjoying life much at all. We took her to the same vets who had always taken care of her. They put her very, very gently to sleep.

We met Stella when she was 3 weeks old, and she came to live with us at 11 weeks; as soon as she was weaned. We treasure every moment of her 13 years and 5 months. She brought much joy into our lives, and we tried hard to make sure that vice-versa was true too.

* FOR DOG & CAT OWNERS:

If you have not yet heard, there is a remarkable new pain medicine for dogs and cats. It is given as a single shot every 4 weeks. Side effects are minimal. It is a monoclonal antibody (bedinvetmab - trade name Librela).

Location: Semi-wild parkland above Wenkenpark, Riehen BS Switzerland.
