Hens & Chix Nix the Heat

Last year, I first photographed and posted this hen and her brood of chicks, roosting much more happily "on a hot tin roof" than Tennessee Williams' Maggie the Cat.
As you see, they are still going strong this year, in spite of our sustained heatwave. How come? The ability to store water and use it later is a great thing that members of the genus Sempervivum have going for them.
