at the bottom of the state of arozona lies organ pipe cactus national monument and the other national monument, the border wall to mexico....we skirted along the border at several locations, once woken up in the middle of the night by what seemed to be a border patrol training exercise in east california

 

the steel wall is nearly 35 feet tall and serves as a deterrent to illegal migration and smuggling into the usa, especially through the harsh and deadly desert landscapes which continue to claim lives

 

the border patrol agent i spoke with here, when asked if the wall has made any difference in his job, was met with a flat negative, 'no difference at all'

 

he stopped to warn us not to linger, as people simply cut through the steel bars, that this area in particular was always busy with illegal activity...during all my hiking in the desert areas i constantly saw the black, one gallon water jugs used by migrants and others, discarded in washes and valleys
