I came across this accident on the way to lunch today. For those of you that know Tampa it was on Dale Mabry Highway just South of Gunn. Accidents here are no special thing, but what I witnessed as I drove by was.
As I got closer to the accident I noticed a Hillsborough County Deputy walking around with a small child in his arms. I don't know where the parents were, but the child was in safe hands. I tried to snap a shot off while driving (this one) but it didn't capture the scene.
I drove off heading to meet my wife for lunch...but the image stuck with me.
I work with Law Enforcement. Not as an officer, but in a support role (I am an equipment supplier). I work with these people daily. They are strong men and women who never get the respect they deserve for what they put up with every day. They are good people who truly care about all of us. What do they get for it? Very little you or I would understand. It's the little things like comforting a child during a hard time that makes them whole. This is the real story that is missed thanks in no small part to the media highlighting the few bad moments rather than the countless wonderful ones.
As I drove on I felt like I needed to capture that moment, but was sure it was over...the child would surely be out of the deputy's arms by now, why go back? But I did go back, and what I witnessed was one of those moments that refreshes your view on humanity.
Not only were there two children and not just one, but there were two Deputies, each holding a child.
I pulled into an adjacent parking lot and with the aid of my 300MM zoom I got the shots following this one through the traffic. They never saw me.
These are the shots you don't see in the paper. They won't feature this as a news teaser. These guys will never get a medal or commondation for this. But you have to wonder, will the children remember this moment of kindness and compassion? My guess is yes, and the world will be a better place for it.
Thank you for all you do for us. You are the true Heroes.
