This photo is an old favourite of mine. It was originally uploaded to Flickr in February 2009 - and I thought it deserved to get a second chance at some attention.
The church dedicated to St George, close to Forum Bovarium, was originally built in the 7th century - but there are mentions of an earlier church in the same place. It had, of course, many later additions, but in the 1920s the church was returned to how it might have looked like in the middle ages by Antonio Muñoz. Much of this restoration work is still visible and gives the church its current character. In 1993 the church was damaged by a car bomb which led to five years restoration work. A part of it was left untouched as a reminder of what happened.
The somewhat older-looking frieze to the left in the photo is actually the Roman Arcus Argentariorum dating to 204 A.D., which was built into the church.
