The Tiber island, one of two to be found in the Tiber river, was in Antiquity also known as Insula Inter-Duos-Pontes (the island between the two bridges) and has for a long time been associated with healing. In Antiquity there was a temple dedicated to Aesculapius here, and in the 16th century a hospital was founded on the island.

Ponte Fabricio, as it is known today or Pons Fabricus as it was originally called in Latin is the oldest bridge in original shape in Rome today. It was originally built in 62 B.C., commissioned by Lucius Fabricius (hence the name). The bridge is alternatively called Ponte dei Quattro Capi, meaning the bridge of four heads, due to the two Janus' heads (a twofaced god) on the bridge, moved there in the 14th century.
