Yes, that is a monster which is just a big mouth of sharp teeth. I am finding quite cute!
In the church of Saint Pierre (or Saint Peter in English), which is the village church of Gatteville-le-Phare. Parts of the church dates back all the way to the 13th century. But most of the current church was built in the 18th and 19th century, like the nave and the choir. But some parts are still old, like here.
The list of inventories that might interest a visitor to the church, calls this construction 'normande', which I in this case think should be interpreted as from the Middle Ages (Normande can of course just mean Norman, but since this in in Normandy, that seems less likely - after all, that means the whole church is Norman). And it is just by the oldest preserved parts of the church, from the 13th century, so a survival from way back then is quite possible.
