Igreja do Carmo, Porto’s Azulejo Masterpiece

The Igreja do Carmo in Porto is one of Portugal’s most photographed landmarks, thanks to its breathtaking azulejo façade. Completed in the 18th century in Baroque style, the church is clad in iconic blue-and-white tiles added in 1912, depicting scenes from the founding of the Carmelite Order and the life of Saint Teresa of Ávila. Each tile panel transforms the church into an open-air gallery, where art, history, and devotion intertwine. Situated beside the Igreja dos Carmelitas, the two churches appear side by side, separated by one of the world’s narrowest houses. A quintessential Porto sight, it embodies the city’s artistic spirit.
