One Noisy Plover
Killdeer (a.k.a. Kildeer, Killdeer Plover, Chattering Plover, Field Plover, Killdee, Noisy Plover, Pasture-bird; Charadrius vociferus) - Blackpoint Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida
"I swear, I didn't kill any deer!
Though, I can't say I'm not an advocate."
Back in the day (before battery operated tape recorders),
biologists and bird watchers would often use words to describe a bird's vocalizations. And in some instances the words describing the bird's most common call would be used as a bird's name. In this case, Charadrius vociferus sounded like it was shouting "Kill deer!", as it walked across the hunter access parking area, and to this day they are known as "Killdeer".
Of coarse, these days, birders simply record bird vocalizations on their Apple thingies. So, good thing these guys already have a name, otherwise they might be called "Swipe-pokes".
