Giant Sphinx

Giant Sphinx Moth caterpillar (Cocytius antaeus) - The Main Park road (State Highway 9336) where it intersects with Rock Reef Pass, Everglades National Park, Miami-Dade County, Florida

A giant caterpillar I found near the Rock Reef Pass Boardwalk. This guy was easily the size of my index finger, and I have big fingers that Dah Wife says are the size of hot dogs. It was also quite a sturdy bugger that shook the shrub it was on when it vigorously wiggled as a defensive strategy against predators.

My thanks to the folks at BugGuide for their help in identifying this remarkable critter. Click on the following link to see the BugGuide posting.
