WHAT'S LYING ON TOP OF DISCOVERIES (D8E_0833s)

Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), built in honor of Henry the Navigator who was instrumental in the success of the Portuguese explorations during the fifteenth century, a period known as the Age of Discoveries.

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the fall of the authoritarian regime, nearly all the Portugal-ruled colonies became independent. The withdrawal of administrative and military rules created political vacuum in these areas during the decolonization period. Angola and Mozambique would later enter into devastating civil wars. East Timor was invaded and occupied by Indonesia. Only Macau remained a Portuguese colony until 1999 when it was returned back to China, and went on to pursue a peaceful "One Country Two Systems" policy similar to Hong Kong's.
