No. 1 Poultry
By James Stirling and Michael Wilford. Designed 1988, completed 1998.
Peter Palumbo's redevelopment of the site in the 1980s was famously the subject of much controversy as it was formerly the home of the Mappin & Webb department store and a collection of mid-Victorian buildings. Stirling's scheme replaced a late 1960s design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for a tower and plaza that was rejected by a public inquiry in 1985.
There followed another round of planning battles over the new design. James Stirling died suddenly in 1992, leaving the project to be completed by his partner, Michael Wilford.
