hou hai serenade

the stringed melody which keeps time to the boatsman's oar.

 

i am told from a number of sources that hou hai is a man made lake. like bei hai is as well. but before the lakes were excavated is was a shipping canal of sorts for bring rice to the forbidden city. so it is easy to imagine an entirely different scenario, where the tourists boats are replaced by farmers bringing their grains to market.
