337/365/3624 (May 14, 2018) - Squirrels (including Juveniles) in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan (March 28th, 2018)
So wow….I have been taking pictures of campus squirrels for nearly 10 years - and today I had an experience I never had before. It was a rainy day (in the morning) in Ann Arbor - Monday May 14, 2018. I have noticed squirrels living inside Michele Oka Doner's 2009 bronze casted statue "Angry Neptune, Salacia and Strider" before. But this was something cool. Well, it started that way. I noticed that the first one out was a mother. Then I realized that there were juveniles in the nest. In the morning, two of them came out of the nest and were relaxing on top of the sculpture. Before I left campus, I took another turn through campus and went back to the sculpture. I saw the mom and started taking pictures. I then heard one of the juveniles make loud noises in the cavity - though I did not see it. Then I realized that the squirrel mom was coming at me. She thought I was threatening her babies. She climbed up my leg and jumped to the other. I gave her some peanuts but she did not stop, so I started walking away and giving her and her nest space. She followed me to the edge of the Museum of Art to make sure I was gone. So I am going to give them a bit more space tomorrow - and wear heavier pants. Crazy day on Monday May 14th, 2018.
