"Some people take pictures. I find them."

"Some people take pictures. I find them." Jane Bown

I went to see the Jane Bown exhibition at The Kings Place Gallery in London today.

Jane Bown only ever used a Rolleiflex TLR camera in the early part of her career, and switched to Pentax and an Olympus OM1. She only ever worked with available light and preferred to keep her camera set to 1/60th or 1/125th at f2.8. She got so skilled at judging light that she didn't need a light meter, she would simply look at he back of her hand and how the light would fall across it to gage her camera settings.

Exposures: Jane Bown: 100 Portraits, in association with The Observer

I took this in Paris on the first 35mm camera I ever owned, a Fujimatic that was held together with masking tape. It had got me through art college and I still think I've taken some of my best shots with it. Sadly I chucked it out a few years ago… wish I'd kept it (sentimental fool, I am).
