'Disguise'

In Yakshagana parlance, the make-up room is called Chowki while the stage is termed as Chowk. The action spills from Chowki to Chowk.

The mythological, human and animal characters which form the structure of Yakshagana is clearly distinguished with choice of make-up and colours.

Divine to demonic - sublime to villainous - each have their own colour scheme and costume. By the colours and make-up patterns on the face of the actor, one would be able to guess his nature, disposition, characteristics and the role he would play.

More or less, colours speak of the inner psyche of the character - thereby justifying the attention paid towards make up in this art form.
