'Open-Air Laundry'
Founded in 1890, close to 800 dhobis and their families live and work in Mumbai's Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat.
The day I visited the place, Mumbai was in festive mood of Ganesh Visarjan and with bakreid around the corner, it was double treat for most of Mumbaikars with couple of days off.
But the dhobis at ghat informed me how they had to attend to constantly flowing collection of soiled clothing shipped from most of Mumbai’s major hotels, hospitals and garment factories. Only day, they say, they take off is during Holi festival.
