Morning Steam

This photograph was taken on the 5th March 2016 at Minehead Railway Station on the West Somerset Railway; and gives you a good idea of how a railway would have looked in the 1950's with the steam engines, the sheds and the water tower to keep the engines topped up with water.

In this picture you can see Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 7F 2-8-0 No.43809 after it has just been topped up with water. The 7F's are something of a rare breed as there where only ever 11 engines ever built.

They were designed for working heavy freight work on the Somerset and Dorset line; but in the 1950's they saw regular use on summer passenger trains where their haulage powers were appreciated but their low top speed was a limitation.
