Old Lancaster County Courthouse (Lancaster, South Carolina)

This stunning Greek Revival structure with Neoclassical elements was erected in 1828 by Willis Alsobrook. It is quite characteristic of the Antebellum courthouses of this part of the American South, with is second-floor entry, sweeping staircases, and columned, temple-like front.

The historic Lancaster County Courthouse's design has been attributed to celebrated Charleston architect Robert Mills, known for his design of the Washington Monument in D.C. Mills is known to have designed the county's historic 1823 jail, but it is less conclusive that he also designed this edifice.

In 1971, this courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1973 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. It was damaged, but not destroyed, by a fire started by an arsonist in 2008. It was restored and reopened as a museum in 2011.

Lancaster, South Carolina is a charming historic community located to the south of Charlotte, North Carolina in the north of the state. It serves as the seat of Lancaster County.
