Leelanau County Courthouse (Suttons Bay Township, Michigan)
Constructed in 2006-08 by the Wilcox DeVere Constr. Co., this structure replaced the former Leelanau County Courthouse that once stood in the village of Leland. It was designed by the architectural firm of the Landmark Design Group. The county's previous courthouse in Leland was built in 1966, and is no longer standing.
With the relocation of the courthouse to this rural site in Suttons Bay Township, Leelanau County holds a unique position in the United States of not having an official county seat. The nearest communities to this building are Lake Leelanau (located two miles to the west) and the town of Suttons Bay (located three miles to the southeast).
Leelanau County is comprised of the Leelanau Peninsula, to the northwest of Traverse City. The county is a scenic resort destination made up of about ten small resort communities.
