The ExtraSchicht - Industrial heritage in action
An event as extraordinary and multifaceted as the Ruhrgebiet itself. The ExtraSchicht has been a cult event for a long time now and this year it will be the meeting-place for people from all over the world. The Night of Industrial Heritage will be taking place on the 17th June for the sixth time, in 38 venues in 19 different towns and cities in the area. From six in the evening to two o’clock the next morning collieries and coking plants, mining tips and blast furnaces, engine houses and blast furnace houses will be swathed in a dreamlike light for a series of extraordinary artistic experiments and shows. Regional, national and international musicians, dancers, artists, and magicians will be opening up a cultural kaleidoscope in the old industrial plants in the region.
ExtraSchicht is the largest cultural event in North-Rhine Westphalia during the World Cup. Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen are not only World Cup venues, they are also ExtraSchicht venues. It goes without saying that sport is also included in the ExtraSchicht programme. And here’s a particularly useful fact: on the ExtraSchicht day there are no World Cup games being held in the Ruhrgebiet – football fans can relax and join in!
