090.365 : Esoteric

I left my car out in the storm last night and the sunroof had perfect little droplet pools of rain on it this morning. The contrast between the blue sky and the remains of the soaking storm reminded me of how we are always at odds with ourselves. We continually are talking to ourselves, taking positions of the id and the superego roles. These inner factions battle while the ego watches from the safety of our present consciousness and awaits a winner and an outcome.

Yes, it's a little esoteric, but there are so many levels we try to capture in our photos. We put our own meanings on photos. That's what makes a photo beautiful. We look at it and make it our own. We draw from it our own conclusions.

You may see the hand as trapped or breaking free. You may think the sky is just clearing or is just about to return with more rain. And beyond that, you start to piece together your own puzzle out of you past experiences and future expectations.

This is what I strive for when shooting conceptual photos. Make the viewer bring their own mind to the photo. If you can succeed in doing so, you've captured the real meaning of photography.
