The COVID-19 crisis in Afghanistan - photo by SAW Afghanistan

Reporters took to the streets of cities in South Sudan, Central African Republic and Afghanistan to ask people what the impact of the coronavirus pandemic is on their lives.

Name: Fatima Khaleqi

Age: 46

Profession: Cook

Location: Kabul, Afghanistan

"After we had to go into quarantine because of the pandemic, I lost my job. Now, I am not making any money to provide for my family. I am 4 months behind on my rent. I try to borrow some cash from relatives, but it is not enough. We are worried we will be suffering from hunger soon.

I am separated from my husband. I have four kids who are living with me. My eldest daughter is 23 years old and I have a son of 6 years old. My elderly mother is also living with us.

If I am not able to earn any income to support my family, to provide them with food, clothes and shelter, they cannot survive. On the other hand, I need to take care of my health and the health of my family as well. If I get infected they will be left with nothing.

Our lives have never been more at risk. We are experiencing the same issues. COVID-19 is treating everyone the same way. This teaches us to listen to each other.

The future is very unpredictable. We have no idea what will happen in the next weeks or months.

The only support I received is the food vouchers from the government. The government is handing out these vouchers to families in need and this gives us daily five pieces of bread. This is not enough for a family of 6.

I hope this situation will be over soon."
