Leeward

This lone tree sits isolated a long distance from others on undulating terrain in Yellowstone National Park.

We encountered 2 bison on this hike into a lesser traveled part of the park, and one human. My kind of place - wide open and views far into the distance.

The first bison we saw from a good distance and were able to navigate our way without close encounter. The second one was a surprise on the return trip. Karen was in front watching where she put her feet on the rocky trail so as to not stumble and fall. I was behind with my head always up and looking outward for animals. As i turned back to look forward i saw a rather large bison resting on its belly only about 30 yards in front of Karen. I yelled, "Karen, 1 o'clock!" She looked up and stopped short. Our friend suddenly stood up straight up and stared at us with a curious look. We immediately retreated and wandered up through thick brush off-trail in the general direction of our intended travel.
