Pavonia Massacre

Pavonia, a port and section of Dutch-controlled New Amsterdam (New York), was the site of a brutal massacre at the hands of William Kieft, then Director of New Netherland. On February 25, 1643, he sent Dutch troops into a settlement of Weckquaesgeek Indians who were on the run from warring Mahicans in the north. The troops killed 120 of them - mostly women and children. They cut open newborns and flung them into the icy river, shot little children, and then decapitated 80 adults and took the heads home with them to New Amsterdam where they kicked them around the streets in a game of kickball.
