Green heron (Butorides virescens)
I shot on this gal from the far side of the pond and watched while she worked her way around the pond. I was standing on a bank of the pond that was about 2 feet tall and couldn't believe that she continued along the shore directly below me searching the shallows.
The lighter plumage and afternoon feeding makes me suspect this is a female, and I imagine that her need to search that particular pond to feed her brood overcame her natural aversion to humans.
Cool birds, easily one of my favorites.
