Manual removal of the placenta, Palazzo Poggi, Bologna
Giovanni Antonio Galli (1708-1782), Professor in the School of Surgery of the University of Bologna, set up a School of Obstetrics at the Palazzo Poggi. His unique teaching methods included life-sized, pot-like ceramic uteri with model babies inside. Students could appreciate how the fetuses were positioned in a twin pregnancy which would have given them the theoretical knowledge to tackle difficult deliveries. The Palazzo Poggi also houses the Aldrovandi museum and a collection of anatomical waxworks by Susini and other artists.
