Abandoned mud therapy establishment
Mud available here contains a complex mix of minerals purported to draw toxins from the body and nourish the skin. Aching bones Healing effects were also noted.
The mud cave is right outside this building. A track mounted crane was used to load the fresh mud from the cave and pour it into the small pools here.
the mud assistant a.k.a "fanghino" (from "fango", italian for mud) used to load buckets of mud from the pools here using a shovel.
each "guest" of the spa was assigned 2 buckets of mud per treatment. While he was laying on a bed in the treatment room, the fanghino would spread the mud over the whole body of the guest and then cover him with a linen
The "mud wrap" session would last for 45-50 minutes and was offered in individual small rooms
Once the session was over, the "used" mud was poured again in the pool to be used for other guests that same day.
Since fresh mud was too strong (and too hot) the small pools were arranged in a 7 rows - 7 days fashion to allow the mud to "decant" for a couple of days before becoming usable.
I'm not sure about that but I believe that mud was kept in the pools at constant temperature with an electric heating system
