While X500 was usually a single GE in later years, on this day a classic Pac-man SD40-2 was in the lead. The trailing AC4400 had developed some kind of a problem between Chicago and Grand Rapids, necessitating its removal from the train. #5997 would then lead the train the rest of the way to Toronto solo.
