C&TS K36 #487
The workhorses of the Cumbres & Toltec are the 4 ex Rio Grande K36 class 2-8-2s. These were not the biggest narrow gauge locomotives owned by the D&RGW, but they are among some of the best ever built. The crews praise their relatively smooth ride and power, though I understand they are not as easy to fire as K27 #463. 1 of them, #489, was recently converted to burn oil, while #484, #487 and #488 continue to burn coal. Wearing its large snow plow, #487 rests in Osier as the daily trains from Chama and Antonito pause for lunch.
