"FROM MORNING TO EVENING
In 1949, Carsltedt made a mural painting for the Ahlström Works' canteen in Kauttua. His entry became third in the competition for proposals for the work, but his idea was, nevertheless, chosen to be carried out. The title of the more than 12-metre wide artwork - From Morning to Evening - reflects the daily cycle seen on the painting's surface and the figures spending time relaxing in the landscape. The depiction of morning that starts on the left-hand side of the painting gradually changes into day, evening, and finally night as it approaches the right-hand edge. The actions of the figures depicted in the painting can be seen as reflecting an ethos that cherished traditions and the atmosphere of post-war reconstruction in Finland.
From Morning to Evening beautifully exemplifies Birger Carlstedt's period of transition. The work's figurative subject is stylized in the cubist manner and can be seen as anticipating his shift to total abstraction and Concretism.
The projection of From Morning to Evening is slightly smaller than the actual painting. The mural is still located in Kauttua, in the western region of Finland known as Satakunta. The painting is 2,5 m tall and 12,5 m wide and has been painted in putrido which is a mixture of oil paint and tempera."
