PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 5, 2011) - Seaman David Burton from Albuquerque, N.M., uses the ship’s helm on the navigation bridge to keep the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) on course in the Pacific Ocean. Burton is responsible for maintaining the ship’s proper course under direction of the conning officer during watch as the ship’s helmsman. George Washington pulled out of her forward-operating port of Yokosuka, Japan Sept. 19 to continue her 2011 patrol. As the Navy’s only full-time forward deployed carrier, George Washington’s mission is to help ensure security and stability in the western Pacific Ocean.
