Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center
School of the Year: Rice University
Rice University was honored as School of the Year.
While many blood drives had to be canceled after Hurricane Ike, Rice students helped replenish the supply and emphasized the need to their peers, staff and faculty on campus.
In 2008, the university held 22 blood drives and saved as many as 2,748 lives. Mac Griswold, director of the Community Involvement Center, worked with a primary student chairperson to lead the effort. They appointed students to lead drives at multiple colleges on campus, which engaged in a friendly competition to recruit the highest percentage of donors.
