Disney World on Her Mind

Northwest Houston resident and blood donor Krystal Pierre is the proud winner of a pair of airline tickets to anywhere Continental Airlines flies in the contiguous United States.

She was randomly selected as the first winner in the “Save Lives and See the World” promotion by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, which is selecting a new prize recipient every two weeks during October and November.

Thanks to the promotion, a trip to Disney World may be in the works for Pierre and her husband.

A lifelong blood donor, she first gave blood at age 17 during a blood drive at her high school. Today Pierre is a Commit for Life member donating once per quarter at Shriners Hospital, where she works in Management Information Systems as a clinical analyst.

“God gave me this blood, so I could give it to others,” says Pierre. “If I’m healthy, I think I should donate.”

Because she has type-O blood, Pierre is a universal donor. That means her blood can be transfused to patients of other blood types. Hospitals rely on type-O blood during emergency situations when there is not enough time to determine a patient’s blood type.
