Avalanche

An avalanche roaring down one of Colorado's most famous avalanche chutes, the East Riverside Slide on the east side of U.S. 550 south of Ouray. The charges needed to start this slide were dropped by helicopter; the slide inundated the 180-foot snowshed (shown at lower right of the photo), filled the canyon below the highway to the right, and moved on up the opposite side of the gorge. After the snow settled, heavy CDOT equipment moved in to reopen the highway.
