Battle scars - EXPLORED

I recently shared a picture of this leopard as he was descending from the tree where he placed a bushbusk he had caught. When he jumped down, he came for a while to lie down on a rock pretty close to where we were sitting in our Landrover and he gave us this intense look just to let us know that he knew we were there.

His name is Xiviti (Braveheart), and it seems it is quite appropriate. At about the age of 2 years, which Xiviti is, male leopards start establishing their own territory. That often involves fighting with other males. These fights can be to the death. It is fairly obvious that Xiviti got into a pretty serious battle with another leopard, probably the night before we came across him. That is a prety serious cut near his left eye.
