Land Cruiser at Hvanngil

07:14:2015 14:57:32 (GMT)

Arriving to Hvanngil at 14:00 (GMT) we sought the comfort of the hut and were happy to spend the remainder of our afternoon and evening out of the rain.

Álftavatn and Hvanngil are the first points along Laugavegur with vehicle access along four wheel drive roads. Judging from the aftermarket modifications on the vehicles we saw, off-roading is a serious matter in Iceland. The yellow tubes feeding the tires of this mid 80’s land cruiser are primarily used to adjust tire pressure for different terrain (e.g. it is affable to deflate tires for soft sandy roads).

Roads along Laugavegur allow for garbage collection at the huts and supply access for guided outfits. Guided groups had meals with fresh meat and vegetables significantly diminishing the appeal of our backpackers' pantry dehydrated calorie bags.

Culinary jealousy aside, the Hvanngil hut had space to hang our wet gear (which was all of it) and get genuinely warm for the first time in roughly 24-hrs. We also learned from our bunk mates that the weather was expected to break, and we’d have clear skies for the remainder of our trip.
