Weed at Berkeley Marina

Note:

Hortulus reports that this is Red Valerian see commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Centranthus_ruber

I thought it was Joe Pye Weed after the Native American herbalist Joe Pye

also called Queen of the Meadow (Eupatorium purpureum), and Sweet Joe-Pye Weed, green-stemmed Joe-pye Weed, Queen of the Meadowroot, Kidney root, Purple boneset.

You might need this next time you have dropsy since Eupatorium has many beneficial uses, including treatment of dengue fever, arthritis, infectious diseases, migraines, worms, malaria, and diarrhea. Boneset infusions are also considered an excellent remedy for influenza.

Reputed to have been named after a Native American doctor who used it medicinally in Massachusetts. Is said to stimulate circulation and sweating; makes a gentle laxative and helps with kidney problems. Some Nat. Amer. tribes still consider it an aphrodisiac. It is for certain a butterfly magnet.

It is in danger of becoming extinct in the wild.

Landscapers use it as a culitvar and it also may be hard to contain in your garden so buy some and transplant in a wild area that needs a little color and then watch it thrive as it survives. It might come in handy next time you call in sick with Dengue Fever!
